Objective: integrating ecological networks into the spatial planning strategy of Catalonia

Problems:

Solutions: All the new sub regional spatial plans include ecological connectivity as a key issue within the so called system of open spaces, which also includes protected areas and high value agricultural areas. The system of open spaces is a key component of land planning, at the same level as human settlements and transport infrastructures.

Results: ecological connectivity is integrated into the catalonian spatial planning strategy and being implemented through different types of planning instruments

Critical factors of success: studies on ecological connectivity were carried out and published leading to a greater awareness about the subject

Key learning points: it is possible to integrate ecological connectivity into land use plans and to implement these even without a legal status of an ecological network
